• Describe the current utilization rates of anticoagulants for the prevention of stroke among patients with AF and the risks associated with underutilization of these agents
• Describe the novel targets in the coagulation cascade that are the basis for newer antithrombotic therapies and discuss their potential implications for stroke prevention among AF patients

TARGET AUDIENCE

This educational activity has been planned in accordance with the need to provide cardiologists and other health care professionals managing patients with atrial fibrillation with important information on stroke prevention among patients with AF.

STATEMENT OF NEED

Antithrombotic therapy is a very important consideration for AF patients, particularly in light of the high risk for stroke. Yet, despite an abundance of evidence, there continues to be underutilization of anticoagulation in patients with AF and many missed opportunities for preventing disabling, and often fatal, strokes among these patients. This education will help cardiologists manage their patients with atrial fibrillation.
