Sana M. Al-Khatib, MD, MHS, FACC

Sana Al-Khatib, MD, MHS, FACC, is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC), the Co-Director of the Duke Center for the Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death, and the Director of Electrophysiology Clinical Trials at the Duke Clinical Research Institute.

After receiving her medical degree from the American University of Beirut, Dr. Al-Khatib completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Cardiology at DUMC. She is a board-certified clinical electrophysiologist and an experienced clinical researcher in cardiac arrhythmias. As a graduate of the NIH-funded Clinical Research Training Program, Dr. Al-Khatib is one of a few electrophysiologists nationwide with expertise in quantitative research methods. Her clinical expertise is in sudden cardiac death prevention, atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, and implantable cardiac devices. Her research expertise lies in the design and conduct of clinical trials, outcomes research, and cost-effectiveness analyses.

Dr. Al-Khatib is a Principal Investigator for an NIH-funded R-01 grant titled: "Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Therapy in Patients with Heart Failure" and a Co-PI for an AHRQ-sponsored R-01 grant titled: "Duke Cardiovascular Center for Education and Research on Therapeutics." She is a recipient of an American Heart Association Career Development Award and has more than 60 publications in peer-reviewed journals. She is an Associate Editor for the American Heart Journal and is on the editorial board for the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology. Dr. Al-Khatib serves on multiple national committees including the Heart Rhythm Society Quality Improvement subcommittee (as a chair), the Heart Rhythm Society Health Policy committee, the ICD Registry Research and Publications committee, and the American College of Cardiology Foundation Clinical Electrophysiology committee.
